The Junction House, Suider Paarl
Known previous uses of the Junction House:
The front shop section housed a butchery and a cafe in the earlier years. The cafe, belonging to Nachum Shedrin, was the first dealer in Paarl to sell carbonated cool drink from a specially manufactured soda plant at the counter.
Another first business that was operated from the shop section was IceKimo in 1992. They were the very first business in the Western Cape to produce ice cubes for the retail market.
At some time, assumingly after a fire destroyed the cafe, the inner walls were removed making the cafe and butchery one large area.
Other businesses known of to operate from the shop section were:
· a plastic moulding plant,
· a furniture retail outlet,
· CJ Treats, a processed meat distributing business,
· Karoo Foods, biltong manufacturing plant,
· Sweetnax, a sweets distributing business,
· a shopfitter & cabinet maker.
The house was earlier a boarding house as described below. Later it was occupied by a family with the surname Veldsman. Mr Veldsman was a furniture upholsterer and apparently very good at it.
The Name:
It seems appropriate to combine Junction and House to Junction House serving as the new name of the old Station Boarding House
No 16, Station Street, Suider-Paarl is situated close to the following transportation links, all forming a junction serving the larger Paarl community.
1. Paarl Railway Station. (50 m)
2. Bus stop for passenger main lines. (300 m)
3. Paarl / Franchhoek taxi drop off / pick up zone. (50 m)
4. On and off ramps to N1 freeway. (700 m)
5. The Gate, (old name for crossing at town entrance) from Franchhoek (1.5 km)
In former years, Paarl Station used to form the major junction to town via rail or road. From the above the Junction part is derived.
In earlier years, the house, which is attached to the previous butchery and the cafe, served as a boarding house. Apparently it was operated by a Mrs Marie Esterhuize. Her husband is believed to have been employed at the KWV, just two blocks away.
Though the house still has nice Oregon pine ceilings and floors, one bedroom has a cement floor. The cause of it was that the boarder occupying this room took a burning cigarette to bed. He fell asleep and the bedding and eventually the room caught fire. The boarder did not survive the incident, but luckily the whole house did not burn down. Today, apart from the cement floor and a steel window frame to that room, there is little evidence of the incident.
The building across the road is well known as The Blue House. It used to be a bar and off sales and serves as a landmark by being painted blue for as long as most in the area can remember. The present owners of the Blue House restored it beautifully, with the intention to redevelop more properties in Suider-Paarl, using the House suffix in the names of their new developments.
